A hydraulic clutch system uses fluid pressure to transfer movement from the clutch pedal to the clutch release mechanism. When the driver presses the pedal, the clutch master cylinder generates hydraulic pressure, which is transmitted through the system to a slave cylinder.

The slave cylinder operates the clutch release mechanism, allowing the clutch to disengage so that gears can be changed. Some vehicles use a concentric slave cylinder, which combines hydraulic actuation with the clutch release bearing in one assembly.
